Don't let that "West Nile Thing" Scare ya!!!
Julie Barker, Holistic Therapy Services
My friend Nancy and I, both YLEO distributors, have had the opportunity over the last several years, to work in conjunction with several "open minded" veterinarians in using a very effective protocol to combat the West Nile Virus when it strikes horses. It is interesting to note that , in the combined caseload in both North and Central Florida that we have personally worked with, which is approaching 50, OVER HALF of the horses that came down with the virus had received ONE if not TWO of the West Nile Vaccines prior to becoming ill and showing symptoms.
The encouraging news is that we have had 100% success in treatment so far, even on one horse who was down for 19 days before we were called in to do the "alternative thing" lol........If the horse is receiving adequate nutrition, there is no reason that he should succumb to the illness in the first place, as proven by my own personal 58 year old Shetland pony, who lives on my farm where we have had 7 cases of WNV in horses right around us (at that time in Citra, FL) and 3 of those were treated allopathically and put down, sadly. "Sugar Princess" would be the typical host of such a virus if she were depressed in her immune system, but she is not....................hasn't had a vaccine in the last 12 years or so that I have had her, and she eats the Dynamite (tm) Complete Grain Ration, takes her Free and Easy (which as well as joint supplement boosting, contains Ester-C and other immune boosting properties) and she is, well, to use a cliche' "healthy as a horse"!!!! (should be).
We have, over the last few years developed a protocol, which uses several YLEO essential oils in the treatment, as well as WNV Homeopathics (which were developed from the first few horses that died in Tallahassee from the virus a few years ago), and nutritional support from a few natural things like Apple Cider Vinegar and some Dynamite Products. If you are interested in working with horses with this protocol , or in attending classes in alternative equine therapies, you may email me at holistichorse@juno.com. All of the Dynamite Products may be purchased through Greg Montgomery, or he can let you know how to get them wholesale.
It is fascinating to me how much less expensive it is, as a general rule, to treat things the "natural way". The main thing, if your horse is diagnosed by a veterinarian with this disease, is not to panic. THERE is a way to solve the problem without DMSO and other drugs that will not harm the liver in the long run. Now, that is a blessing!!
ARE YOU DIGESTING YOUR FOOD LIKE YOU SHOULD BE?
Julie A. Barker, Holistic Therapy Services
Poor digestion and absorption of nutrients are the cause of many major health problems. Dr. Regan Golob, Gold Senior Director for Dynamite® Nutritional Products tells us that an interesting characteristic to tell you when someone has poor digestion is the dowager's hump at the base of the neck where it enters the shoulders. There are nerves connected to digestion there, so enlargement means that the body is sending extra energy there to try to stimulate digestion. It also means that your spine is becoming de-mineralized from your body's efforts to alkalize your blood. There are several easy nutritional things you can do
To take in and maximize your body’s use of
minerals.
Let's back up and look at the digestive process. We know from the book "Your
Health Your Choice" by Dr. Morter that our stomach is the only organ that should
be acid rather than alkaline. When you eat a meal, especially protein, stomach
acid should fall to a pH of 2, which is strong enough to take the wax off your
floor! When you have indigestion, gas or heartburn, it is because you have too
little stomach acid, not too much. Or, your stomach acid is too weak (too high
pH) to digest the food, so the body just keeps trying to make more and you have
acid reflux. Antacids work by soaking up stomach acid, creating an emergency, so
your body goes on red alert and secretes more acid to finish the digestion, and
that's what makes you feel better. (Makes the Adkins diet look a little bit
scary in the long run, doesn’t it??)
You would actually do better to take some
un-pasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar at this time, than you would , certainly to
take ANY kind of antacid. You should feel better within minutes of ingesting
the vinegar.
Ironically, if your body does not have the proper alkaline reserve of organic
minerals from your properly chelated supplements and a 75% vegetable and fruit
diet, your stomach cells cannot make enough hydrochloric acid. There is no
“blanket” fix or drug that will do anything other than mask symptoms. You need
to get to the nutritional root of the problem and fix that.
Side-effects of poor digestion range from constipation, headaches, depression,
food allergies, cellulite, parasites and bacteria, infections like e-coli,
fatigue and gas/heartburn to arthritis, fibromyalgia, other autoimmune diseases
and even cancer. This is because undigested food rots in your colon, releasing
toxins that invade the bloodstream and poison your whole system. It is often
said that "death begins in the colon." Over the counter acid-blockers are not
really the answer, and can have serious side-effects if you really understand
how and WHY you have indigestion in the first place.
Ideally, you should have three bowel movements daily, one for each meal you
eat. Dr. Golob and Dr. Morter feel that doctors who consider it "normal" to
only have a bowel movement every few days are way off base. You may email me at
holistichorse@juno.com for Dr. Golob’s
recipe for carrot salad. Eaten for one week each month ,this salad will help
stimulate peristalsis and bile secretion.. Magnesium is another great mineral
to help in the elimination process. Miracle Clay® is a great way to detoxify
the liver and the body and get the body back to normal digestive function.
Drinking eight glasses of quality water a day and incorporating lots of
water-containing, high fiber fruits and veggies will keep your elimination on
track, and you will experience more energy as you become less toxic. Avoid dairy
products, which cause mucous that coats the digestive tract. Coffee actually
"tans" the digestive tract like leather, so that it can't absorb
nutrients.
People often ask Dr. Golob if they should take digestive enzymes. He, among
others, feel that enzymes prop the body up rather than assisting natural
functions. When we have the full spectrum of trace minerals in our system, we
can manufacture our own enzymes properly. So if you take digestive enzymes for a
specific reason and time under the guidance of your practitioner, that is one
thing. To just live on them will make your body lazy. Optimum digestion is
essential for your overall health.

Before I speak, let me preface this article to make it clearly understood, this
information is not a blame or vendetta towards anything or anyone. It also needs
to be unmistakably understood that I am not for or against vaccinating horses.
My sole intent and/or purpose is to educate and inform the horse owner regarding
concerns of their horse(s) health in an effort to assist and/or prevent the
tragic misfortune that happened to our gelding, Dartanian. He was one of the
principal characters in the book, "The Spiritual Life of Horses." His love,
integrity, courage, loyalty and quite often humor, will live on in our hearts
through his inspiration and valor.
In mid August we were suggested to vaccinate against West Nile Virus, I simply
was not well-educated on the vaccine nor the virus or knew the right questions
to ask at the time. With the first shot, three of our horses reacted. Our
pregnant mare, our gelding and Dr. Warren's stallion, all had the same
re-action, their front legs swelled. Within 2 days, our gelding Dartanian
foundered, shortly there after he died!
These are adverse reactions to a vaccine. The reactions our horses experienced
are not soley limited to what we saw. Other adverse reactions stated by Fort
Dodge's safety study are: systemic reactions, colic, diarrhea, fever, swellings.
The West Nile Vaccine is new. According to Dr. Charlie McDaniel from USDA, "this
is what is called a conditional vaccine. New vaccines such as this, are granted
a one year 'conditional' trial period. If safety and efficacy are established, a
renewal license for a second year may be granted." The West Nile Vaccine license
has been renewed for another year. He also stated "when a new vaccine is
released it is sold and provided only through veterinarians for one reason,
because the manufacturer needs to monitor the field response." If any reaction
occurs then it is the responsibility of the practicing veterinarian to
record it and report it to the manufacturer immediately in case there is a
problem with that serial batch of vaccine.
In the case of the West Nile Vaccine, the manufacturer is Fort Dodge. I spoke
with Dr. Tuttle at Fort Dodge regarding our situation and also explained what I
was dealing with afterward. Dr. Tuttle, listened intently to what I described,
documented my report and said to me, "Lynette, please accept my greatest
apologies for what you have gone through, I am a practicing veterinarian, this
information is not falling on deaf ears, I will investigate this immediately."
He also stated, "we urge and encourage people to contact us immediately and
report adverse reactions to our vaccines. We subsequently report it to the USDA
and investigate the serial numbers of the batches that were being used to see if
the batch has been contaminated. If people don't report problems then we don't
know."
Dr. Tuttle also stated to me, " if there is the slightest indication that the
vaccine caused a problem then it needs to be reported to us without delay so
that we can investigate and research that batch."
If your horse(s) have had a reaction to this vaccine, Dr. Charlie McDaniel, USDA
and Dr. Tuttle from Fort Dodge are asking you to contact them and report it. The
following is their contact information:
Dr. Charlie McDaniel, USDA,
Email: charles.1.mcdaniel@aphis.usda.gov
Tel# 1-515-232-5785 ext. 146
Also www.usp.org/vprp.htm this is a website
where you document what happened. Once the information is received it is
therefore reported to the manufacturer. The manufacturer then investigates and
researches the problem. If a bad batch of vaccine has made it's way to the
public it is then recalled. This is my understanding of recourse from both Dr.
McDaniel and Dr. Tuttle.
